In recent years, the rise of computational tools has led to the emergence of architecture characterized by free and organic forms, creating an intriguing field that has facilitated their conception, optimization, rationalization, and fabrication. While highly efficient, this symbiosis between form and manufacturing often required specialized knowledge that was not easily accessible.

This workshop introduced various methods in Rhino and Grasshopper for designing and constructing organic geometry with bamboo. Topics covered included reticular membranes, grid shells, form-finding, bamboo construction techniques, and related subjects.

Over the first four days, basic parametric design concepts in Grasshopper were explored, which could be applied to other creative processes across various scales and contexts. We examined how visual programming with the Rhinoceros and the Grasshopper plugin enhanced the design process by enabling the modelling of surfaces and meshes as a foundation for generating reticular membranes and bamboo structures.

En los últimos años, el florecimiento de las herramientas computacionales llevó al surgimiento de una arquitectura con formas libres y orgánicas, creando un campo interesante que facilitó su concepción, optimización, racionalización y fabricación. Esta simbiosis entre forma y manufactura, aunque muy eficiente, a menudo requería de un conocimiento poco accesible.

El propósito de este taller fue facilitar diferentes métodos tanto en Rhino como en Grasshopper para concebir, diseñar y construir geometría orgánica con bambú. Se abordaron temas como las membranas reticulares, mejor conocidas como gridshells, búsqueda de forma (formfinding), técnicas constructivas con bambú, entre otros tópicos.

Durante los primeros cuatro días del taller, se discutieron conceptos básicos del diseño paramétrico en Grasshopper, que pudieron ser replicados en otros procesos creativos, en diversas escalas y aplicaciones. Exploramos cómo la programación visual utilizando el software Rhinoceros y el plugin Grasshopper generó fluidez para el proceso de diseño; en este caso, a través del modelado de superficies y mallas como base para la generación de membranas reticulares y estructuras de bambú.
