parametric design and fabrication drawings for scenography

time tunnel

type: scenography
role: computational designer
collaboration: Estudio Guto Requena
location: Santa Catarina, Brazil
year: 2023

The time tunnel was developed in collaboration with Estudio Guto Requena for Spaten and serves as the entrance to the VIP area of Oktoberfest 2023 in Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Managed by Camila Gonçalves, the tunnel’s concept drew inspiration from the brewery’s history and its iconic symbol, the pennant. My role involved translating this concept into the tunnel’s design and producing the executive drawings for construction.

The design symbolizes the passage of time, moving from past to future, represented by an hourglass pattern on the floor. Two key symbols from Spaten’s identity were integrated: the pennant at the entrance and the arrow at the exit. These elements were morphed using Pufferfish (Grasshopper) to generate the metallic LED frames, which display significant dates from Spaten’s history, reinforcing the concept of time in motion.

Leston Studio produced the videos to translate these ideas into a more realistic setting, and Studio Doisdois created the renders.

design process

LED frames (op.1)

Tapering of the walls to simulate the hourglass
Pennant at the entrance and arrow at the tunnel’s exit (polylines)
Tween two curves along curves (Pufferfish)
The tweened curves generate the metallic LED frames

LED panel (op.2)

Pennant at the entrance and exit and the arrow in the middle of the tunnel
Adding thickness to the curves to represent the wooden structure, painted in a metallic colour
Tween three curves along curves (Pufferfish)
The 50×50 cm LED panels are placed between the wooden structure
